October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month—a reminder of the importance of staying informed and proactive about breast health. While breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women, early detection can significantly increase the chances of successful treatment and recovery.

Did you know that 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime? The good news is that when breast cancer is caught early, the 5-year survival rate can be as high as 99%. To empower you and your loved ones, we’ve gathered some key tips for early detection.

Here are some key tips for early detection:

1. Perform Regular Breast Self-Exams

Monthly self-exams are an essential step for detecting changes in your breast tissue. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Start by looking at your breasts in the mirror with your shoulders straight and your arms on your hips. Look for any visible changes such as dimpling, swelling, or changes in the shape and contour of your breasts.
  2. Raise your arms and look for the same changes.
  3. Feel your breasts while lying down and when standing up, using a firm, smooth touch. Cover the entire breast area, from collarbone to the top of your abdomen and from armpit to cleavage.
  4. If you notice anything unusual, such as lumps, thickening, or discharge, consult your healthcare provider.

2. Know What’s Normal for You

Every woman’s breasts are different. Knowing what is normal for you will help identify when something feels off. Consider keeping a journal to track changes over time, noting the size, shape, and feel of your breasts.

3. Schedule Routine Mammograms

Mammograms are X-rays that can detect lumps or abnormalities that you might not feel. Here’s what you should know:

  • For women over 40: It’s generally recommended to get a mammogram every 1-2 years, but you should talk to your doctor to determine what’s best for you based on your health history.
  • For women with a higher risk (such as those with a family history of breast cancer): You may need to start earlier or have additional screenings like MRIs.

4. Discuss Family History and Genetic Testing

If breast cancer runs in your family, let your healthcare provider know. Genetic testing for mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes can provide more clarity on your risk and guide the frequency of your screenings.

5. Listen to Your Body

Some early signs of breast cancer may include:

  • A new lump or thickening in the breast or underarm area.
  • Change in the size, shape, or appearance of a breast.
  • Unexplained pain in the breast or nipple.
  • Nipple discharge, other than breast milk.

If you experience any of these symptoms, don’t wait—schedule a consultation with your doctor.

6. Prioritize a Healthy Lifestyle

While not all breast cancers can be prevented, certain lifestyle choices can help reduce your risk. Consider incorporating these habits:

  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Limit alcohol intake.
  • Stay physically active.
  • Eat a balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

7. Don’t Skip Annual Check-Ups

Even if you feel fine, it’s important to visit your healthcare provider regularly. During your annual physical, your doctor will check for potential concerns and recommend screenings based on your age and risk factors.
